Dear Millersburg Area School District Community:
As we approach the Thanksgiving Recess, I wish your families a safe and healthy holiday season and anticipate you will be able to spend some time reflecting on the things for which you are grateful. As Superintendent, I am very thankful for our students, staff, and community. I am grateful for your on-going efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, which has allowed us to keep our school doors open. I ask that you continue those efforts with vigilance throughout the holiday season and beyond.
Now, some important information regarding school for the upcoming winter months. With our ability to teach remotely, the District is able to provide virtual instruction instead of closing school due to inclement weather. During the 2020-2021 school year, the District does not intend to use any snow days. Instead, we will be using our abilities to teach remotely on those days for all students using the Sample Schedules provided below. This is consistent with the proclamation submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and accounts for a “remote learning day”.
As many things have changed due to the pandemic, the thought of children not having “snow days” may be disappointing. However, I believe the advantage of families being able to plan and rely on scheduled days off in January, February, and surrounding the Easter Recess may provide a more substantial benefit as we navigate through what could be a challenging winter season considering the pandemic. The District will continue to use two-hour delays and early dismissals due to weather concerns, if deemed necessary. In the event that we are unable to substantially deliver remote instruction during a closure, i.e. broad power outages, the District may need to cancel the day and make it up utilizing the corresponding Make-Up Day in the approved school calendar.
In the event of a school/District closure due to the enhanced community spread of COVID-19, the District will move to remote learning and utilize the same Sample Schedules provided.
I wish you health and happiness during the holiday season and I sincerely thank you for your continued support of our district.
