As our students begin a new school year, you will be taught new, stronger academic standards in English and math called the Pennsylvania Core Standards. These standards are not curriculum, but rather an outline of what students should know by the end of each grade level. To measure the progress that students are making toward achieving the standards, schools assess student performance on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) tests in grades 3 through 8 and Keystone Exams in high school.
This school year (2014-15), there will be changes to the reading, writing and math PSSAs that students in grades 3-8 take in the spring to reflect that the tests are now aligned to the Pennsylvania Core Standards. As a result of this alignment, the separate writing PSSAs in grades 5 and 8 will be eliminated and instead all students in grades 3-8 will take an English Language Arts PSSA that includes both reading and writing.
